ESAB HandyArc 1/8 – The Smallest Welder You’ve Ever Seen

ESAB’s newest stick welder, the HandyArc 1/8, proves that size doesn’t matter – at least when used correctly. While this machine won’t be perfect for every situation, it’s one of the most portable welders ever made. In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about ESAB’s new HandyArc 1/8 and how you can get the most out of it.

A Price Never Seen Before

Over the last two decades, welding machines have been getting smaller and lighter – but not necessarily cheaper. In fact, sometimes you’re even paying more for the extra portability.

The HandyArc bucks that trend by possibly being the cheapest machine in ESAB’s entire lineup. With a price tag of just a couple hundred bucks, that’s a number we almost never see from the top brands. Bear in mind that you’re also getting ESAB’s trusted seal of quality assurance plus a 1-year warranty. So while it costs less than other machines, the HandyArc is far better than any cheap knock-off-brand welder.

If you’re looking for a cost-effective, small welder to make easy repairs or you’re a beginner welder, the HandyArc is one of the best options when it comes to value.

A Size Never Seen Before

When it comes to size and weight, the HandyArc is in a class of its own. Coming in at just 6.3 lbs, you can easily carry this machine around with one hand. That small size comes with a small footprint: The HandyArc measures 10.3" L x 4.5" W x 7.1" H.

To put that all into perspective, our next smallest ESAB stick machine is the Rogue ES 151iP. When that machine came out, it was hailed as one of the lightest machines ever made at 18.2 lbs. The new HandyArc is 115% lighter than that!

The HandyArc is so light, you could carry it around using the shoulder strap while you weld. We’ve never seen that level of portability from ESAB before.

Is the HandyArc 1/8 for you?

The HandyArc is both lightweight and cost-effective, but is it the right machine for you?

First off, the HandyArc is only for welding 1/8 stick electrodes (SMAW). The machine can weld a variety of rods including E6011, E6013 and E7018. On your standard 120-volt plug, the HandyArc is capable of hitting up to 70 amps.

The HandyArc is actually also capable of running off a 240-volt plug as well. At that power, it’s capable of hitting 160 amps which is quite impressive for a machine of its size. However, it should be noted that the HandyArc 1/8 only comes with a 120-volt plug. You’ll need to purchase a separate adapter if you want to run it off 240 volts.

When evaluating if the HandyArc is right for you, ask yourself: Do I need an incredibly portable stick machine capable of welding up to ¼” mild steel? It’s perfect for beginner welders, some hobby welders or welders who need to make small repairs in the field. For instance, if you’re an off-road enthusiast, having a stick welder you can throw in the back of the truck and use to make quick repairs is awesome. The HandyArc should work with most generators; just make sure you check the power requirements (which we explain how to do in this guide).
