As a trusted partner of the best brands in welding, we work directly with manufacturers every day to ensure our customers get the best products and service. We're excited to share this guest article written by Shawn Hall, a director at Wizard Welding.
The same trusted Blue Magic® Anti-Spatter formula from Wire Wizard is now available in a nonflammable, air-powered spray can. Blue Magic® is water-based and nontoxic, formulated for superior performance in industrial MIG welding applications. The spray can uses the same original Blue Magic formula that contains no methylene chloride, no flammable propellant or other hazardous chemicals. Proudly made in the USA and ready to work its magic on tough spatter buildup in your shop!
Why Did a Lot of Anti-spatter Formulas Recently Change?
In May of 2025, the EPA banned the use of methylene chloride in all consumer products. They have set a fast-approaching deadline of April 28, 2026, for prohibiting the use of methylene chloride in most industrial and commercial applications. Methylene chloride has been deemed a carcinogen and was commonly found in many aerosol-based anti-spatter products. This led to many anti-spatter suppliers scrambling to reformulate in order to be compliant with the new EPA ban. The good news is Blue Magic® Anti-spatter contains no methylene chloride (or any other toxic chemicals) and never has since it first entered the market over 20 years ago.
Why Water-based Anti-spatter?
Water-based anti-spatter has many advantages over oil-based anti-spatters. First and foremost, the water-based formula used in Blue Magic® is nontoxic and biodegradable. It is nonflammable and does not use a flammable propellant, which is prohibited from being near the welding arc by OSHA. Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of having a water-based formula is that it is safe for painted surfaces and does not require any additional cleanup with toxic solvents. Blue Magic’s silicone-free formula contains no ingredients that cause imperfections – parts can go straight from production to paint.
There are some common misconceptions about water-based anti-spatter, however many of these are due to poorly formulated products or improper application methods. One common belief is that water-based anti-spatter causes weld porosity issues. This typically occurs when too much anti-spatter is applied to a workpiece and can happen with any anti-spatter formulation – water or oil-based. When too much is applied, the anti-spatter can pool up in the weld and result in porosity, especially when not enough time is allowed for it to dry. With a bag-on-valve spray can design (also commonly used with sunscreen), Blue Magic® sprays in a fine mist that is fast-drying, helps prevent over-application and creates a consistent layer of protection.
Air-powered Spray Can Advantages
Unlike most anti-spatters on the market that utilize a traditional aerosol can design, Blue Magic® uses a nonflammable, air-powered spray can with innovative bag-on-valve technology. The can uses only compressed air for a propellant, eliminating the risk of a fire hazard near the arc as well as harmful chemicals that are often used in other spray cans. The design of the bag-on-valve spray can allows 100% use of the product down to the last drop, while traditional aerosol cans leave a small amount of wasted product once the propellant runs out. This design also allows the ability to spray a full 360°, with a consistent spray pattern from any angle.
Additionally, the spray can features a glove-friendly locking trigger that sprays evenly on surfaces, not your glove. The actuator is designed for heavy-duty use, unlike the small cylindrical actuators on other spray cans that can fall off or get stuck in the down position, resulting in a mess to clean up and a substantial amount of wasted product.
Performance That Works as Hard as You Do
