How Engine-Driven Welders Work

Instead of drawing power from a wall outlet, an engine drive makes its own. The engine spins an alternator that produces your welding current, and most units also put out auxiliary AC power you can use to run grinders, lights, and other tools straight off the machine. Because the engine sets the pace, keeping it maintained and turning at the right speed is what gives you a steady arc. Larger engines and higher weld-output ratings let you push more amperage and burn bigger electrodes without the machine bogging down.

Gas vs Diesel vs LP

The engine you choose comes down to how hard and how often you run:

• Gas. Lower upfront cost, lighter weight, and easy to service. A strong fit for weekend warriors, farm and ranch work, and lighter-duty mobile jobs, with fuel available anywhere.
• Diesel. More torque, better fuel economy, and longer service life under heavy daily use. This is the standard for pipeline, structural, and full-time mobile welders who run all day.
• LP (propane). Clean-burning, easy cold-weather starts, and fuel that stores well for long stretches. A good match for operations already set up on propane or working where emissions matter.

Duty Cycle and Generator Output Explained

Duty cycle tells you how long a machine can weld before it needs to cool. A rating like 200 amps at 60 percent means you can weld at 200 amps for 6 minutes out of every 10, then let it rest. Dial the amperage down and the duty cycle climbs. For production work, buy enough duty cycle that you are not standing around waiting on the machine to catch up.

Running a Welder Off a Generator

Going the other direction, running a plug-in welder off a separate generator, comes down to two things: enough power and clean power. The generator has to supply enough continuous wattage that its engine does not slow down mid-arc, because when the voltage sags the arc goes unstable and your welds suffer. Power quality matters just as much: conventional generators put out “dirty” power that can upset the electronics in MIG, TIG, and inverter machines, so an inverter generator or a unit with low harmonic distortion is the safer choice.
